The movie was originally a late seventies Broadway musical by Stephen Sondheim. The musical was met with positive reviews in its first run on Broadway, and there have been several revivals.
The movie tells the story of Benjamin Barker ,who later changes his alias to Sweeney Todd, a barber by trade that was exiled to Australia so that a corrupt judge can have Todd/Barker's wife to himself. The story begins about fifteen years after this event and Sweeney Todd has found his way back to London in search of his wife and his daughter who was an infant at the time he was sent to exile for a crime he did not commit. Sweeney becomes obsessed with seeking revenge on the corrupt judge, when he learns that his wife poisoned herself and her daughter is now the ward of the corrupt judge. The music that adds another layer to this complex thriller.

Sweeney Todd (played by Johnny Depp) is a complex character that shows how different people deal with crisis and hardship. This film raises an in important question; does our life experiences and hardship shape our future?
In the film Sweeney Todd (previously Benjamin Barker) seeks revenge on those that he feels created hardship in his life. He becomes so obsessed with revenge that it ultimately leads to his down fall. After watching this movie I find myself asking if the devastating events of his life were to much to overcome? Was exacting revenge his only way of coping with his life? I often feel that this basic theme is prevalent in day to day life. Individuals obsess about devastating things that has happened and in the mean time miss out on life.

All in all this is a very well-done film. The acting and vocals are superb and the music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim further add to the message of the story. This is a very graphic film and is not suitable for the faint of heart. This movie centers around merciless killings and the deaths are shown in gory detail. If you are able to look past the gore, what is left tells the complex story of revenge, and obsession.
